For Lack of a Spay

March 16, 2007

A few tears ago, a lady rescued a dog. She lived 'out' where the concept of spaying and neutering your pets is NOT foremost on most peoples mind. A few months later the dog had puppies. The lady tried to give them away but found no takers. She kept them and still no one was spayed or neutered. They bred among themselves and had puppies.

By the time the next generation was born there were 32 of them. They had poor immune systems and unstable mental capacity. There were so many there was no way the now elderly lady could properly socialize them or care for them. Authorities were contacted when the dogs became dangerous to the lady. Social Services ordered (justifiably) that most of the dogs be removed. There were 9 puppies and their mother that had been placed in a 6 x 6 puppy pen since they were born. The puppies are now 5 months old. The amount of filth they were living on was unbelievable. They had hundreds of fecal balls hardened in their hair. They were completely terrified to be handled. These were the only ones of the 32 that had not become vicious.

Was there a crime here??? Not unless you want to hold responsible the lawmakers of a state that has no spay neuter laws. Not unless you want to hold responsible the public and the voters who allow this situation to continue.

For our part, we are having great luck socializing the four that we saved…four out of 32. They are still a bit unsure of people and new things, we are very pleased with the progress they have made and continue to make.

These 4 were taken to FAMILY PET SALON in Fultondale and they did a great job of cleaning these guys up. The pups were even better socialized when they returned from their day at the Spa. Please see the pictures of these precious babies. And please spay and neuter your pets.
