BROOKE AND STEPHI

UPDATE November 2007: These 2 happy girls were adopted together and now live in Washington DC with a wonderful mom... Healthy and very much loved!

These two innocent Golden Retriever puppies were rescued after surviving a hellish nightmare. In the middle of the night, they were both tossed cruelly onto someone's front yard - left to die more than likely as the temperatures were well below freezing.

When TEARS arrived, we were horrified that not only could someone be so cruel as to leave them out in the cold, but to leave them knowing full well that one of the puppies was suffering 2 broken legs.

That's right - not one, but both of the puppies's back legs were broken. She certainly could not have sought shelter or help. To add to the awful situation, each puppy had a word written on their side with black permanent marker. What the words meant - we don't know. Were these two sisters part of a prank, a cruel joke or something worse? What other abuse had they suffered?

They were taken straight to the vet where they were examined and the ones broken legs were casted. She has a long road ahead of her - a minimum of 6 weeks with both casts. She will need help to potty, will need assistance with eating and drinking and lots of encouragement.

Both of these girls have stolen our hearts. To have endured so much at such a young age. We have named them Brooke and Stephi. Brooke is the puppy with the 2 broken legs; Stephi is her devoted sister.

TEARS is seeking a wonderful, loving foster home for Brooke and Stephi. Someone who is home most of the day would be perfect so they can help Brooke adjust to her temporary set-back. For now, we think it would be best to keep the girls together also as Stephi provides much comfort to Brooke. Eventually, they can be adopted separately though we believe there is someone out there who would welcome these two sisters into the same home.

Update 2/8/07 - The x-rays show the back legs were actually twisted. If anyone recognizes these puppies please call (205) 744-3373.

Brooke...

Stephi...

Update 7/3/07 - Brooke and Stephi have been returned to TEARS for adoption again. Health issues with the owner has caused her to surrender these precious little girls back to TEARS.

Both of these puppies have true Golden temperaments. They are both very outgoing, great with people and children, wonderful with other dogs, smart, gentle - everything you could ever want in a family pet. Brooke is more playful and is always ready for a good game of fetch, chase the ball or tug-of-war. Stephi is a bit more low key, easy going and loving. She would prefer to be loved on. These two are very devoted to one another - after all they went through can you blame them?
